چکیده
We propose a short overview of a few selected issues of magnetism in reduced dimensions, which are the most relevant to set the background for more specialized contributions to the present Special Issue. Magnetic anisotropy in reduced dimensions is discussed, on a theoretical basis, then with experimental reports and views from surface to single-atom anisotropy. Then conventional magnetization states are reviewed, including macrospins, single domains, multidomains, and domain walls in stripes. Dipolar coupling is examined for lateral interactions in arrays, and for interlayer interactions in films and dots. Finally thermally-assisted magnetization reversal and superparamagnetism are presented. For each topic we sought a balance between well established knowledge and recent developments. Exact and Approximate Theoretical Techniques for Quantum Magnetism in Low Dimensions
Quantum magnetism in low dimensions has been one of the central areas of theoretical research for many decades now. One of the key reasons for the long standing interest in this field has been the existence of simplified models, which serve as paradigms for understanding the role of strong interactions in many-electron systems. Although simple, these models quite often can not be solved exactly...

متن کاملCoexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in two dimensions.
Ferromagnetism is usually considered to be incompatible with conventional superconductivity, as it destroys the singlet correlations responsible for the pairing interaction. Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are known to coexist in only a few bulk rare-earth materials. Here we report evidence for their coexistence in a two-dimensional system: the interface between two bulk insulators, LaAlO(...
متن کاملMetamagnetics with rainbow colors.
A family of coupled nanostrips with varying dimensions is demonstrated exhibiting optical magnetic responses across the whole visible spectrum, from red to blue. We refer to such a phenomenon as rainbow magnetism. The experimental and analytical studies of such structures provide us with a universal building block and a general recipe for producing controllable optical magnetism for various pra...
متن کاملSimulation of the electron-phonon interaction in infinite dimensions
The electron-phonon interaction corresponding to the Holstein model (with Coulomb repulsion) is simulated in infinite dimensions using a novel quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The thermodynamic phase diagram includes commensurate charge-density-wave phases, incommensurate chargedensity-wave phases, and superconductivity. The crossover from a weak-coupling picture (where pairs both form and conden...
